- Spoon or spatula for mixing
- Deep frying pan or pot
- Slotted spoon
- Paper towels
- Baking sheet (if freezing wontons)
Ingredients
For the filling:
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger minced
- 2 green onions finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup finely shredded cabbage optional
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional, for binding
For assembling:
- Wonton wrappers store-bought or homemade
- Water for sealing wontons
For frying:
- Vegetable oil
For serving (optional):
- Soy sauce
- Sweet chili sauce
- Chopped green onions
Instructions
Prepare the Filling:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, minced garlic, minced ginger, chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly distributed.
- If using cabbage, add it to the mixture and combine. The cabbage adds extra crunch and flavor to the filling.
- If the mixture seems too loose, you can add a tablespoon of cornstarch to help bind it together.
Assemble the Wontons:
- Take a wonton wrapper and place it on a clean, dry surface.
- Spoon about a teaspoon of the chicken filling into the center of the wrapper.
- Dip your finger into some water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
- Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Make sure there are no air pockets trapped inside.
- Optionally, you can create different shapes like simple triangles or traditional purse shapes by bringing the corners together and sealing them.
Fry the Wontons:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot (around 350°F/175°C), carefully add the wontons in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry the wontons for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the cooked wontons from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve the chicken wontons hot with your favorite dipping sauces such as soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or a combination of both.
- Garnish with chopped green onions for added freshness and color.
- Enjoy these delicious homemade chicken wontons as an appetizer, snack, or part of a meal.
Notes
- You can make the filling ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before assembling the wontons.
- Freeze any leftover uncooked wontons on a baking sheet in a single layer, then transfer them to a freezer bag once they're frozen solid. They can be fried directly from frozen when needed.
- Experiment with different dipping sauces to find your favorite flavor combination.
